Although all technical issues have been coordinated, Karabakh process lacks confidence, expert Vicken Cheterian said.

“The problem of unrecognized states in the South Caucasus can be settled either through their recognition or maintenance of status quo or resumption of hostilities,” he said during a lecture in RA National Academy of Sciences.

“As to the Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijan may take action to resolve it, up to military operations. It means that there is a risk of a new war in the region,” Cheterian said.

“The West views all conflicts in the Caucasus as a result of nationalism, what is erroneous and dangerous,” he added.

According to Cheterian, Karabakh, conflict unlike other regional disputes, is more acute, as it refers to the identity of the Armenian nation.

“Azerbaijan attempted to resolve this political conflict by the use of force but the war always complicates the situation and leads to unpredictable consequences,” he noted.

Touching on Iran’s willingness to mediate between the conflicting parties, the expert emphasized that it’s a result of the West’s diplomacy.
