Arman Melikyan, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arstakh Republic doesn’t have expectations for the upcoming visit of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Armenia.

“For me, the Medvedev-Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting in St. Petersburg and the joint statement issued by the Presidents of the OSCE MG Co-chair countries carry much more importance,” Melikyan told reporters on July 2.

“The recent presidential statement marked the end of another stage of Karabakh talks,” he said. “Presently, the superpowers can nothing but keep the process in deadlock.”

According to Melikyan, things can get moving only thanks to initiatives of the conflicting parties.

“In this context, Clinton will arrive in the region to familiarize herself with the positions of the sides at the spot,” he said.

As to the Obama-Medvedev-Sarkozy statement, Melikyan noted that the conflicting sides interpret the text of the statement in their own way to strengthen their positions within their countries.

At that, he pointed out to the Armenian National Congress as the only force in Armenia that can come forth with new proposal on Karabakh conflict settlement.

“However, the ANC take no action to that end,” he said.
