Samvel Khachatryan: Gor Minasyan has won Armenia’s first silver medal of Olympic Games since 1996

Armenia won four medals at Singapore Olympic Games. Specifically, weightlifter Gor Minasyan (weight class 85kg) won silver medal, while weightlifter Smbat Margaryan (weight class 56kg), judoist David Kazaryan (weight class 66kg) and freestyle wrestler Artak Hovhannisyan (weight class 46kg) won bronze.

Chief coach of Armenia’s youth weightlifting team Eduard Kizogyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter that he is dissatisfied with the performance of his team, as it could show better results. However, he is happy with the two gained medals. “The Olympiad brought together the strongest sportsmen; nevertheless, Margaryan could show a better result in weigh class 56kg. Unfortunately, his leg injury has prevented him from doing so,” said Kizogyan.

Margaryan said for his part that he has not managed to exceed his best result. “I lifted 255kg at the European Championships, but managed to lift only 243kg at the Olympiad,” noted Margaryan.

Margaryan will participate in the European youth championships in Cyprus in November 2010.

According to the coach, Gor Minasyan could win gold medal. Meanwhile, Minasyan is happy with his silver medal at such a tournament.

President of Armenia’s Weightlifting Federation Samvel Khachatryan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter that the most important thing is that the two sportsmen have won medals. “Armenia has not won a silver medal since the Olympic Games in 1996, while Minasyan has managed to do it,” concluded Khachatryan.
