Bulgaria wants to join Nabucco

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said that Bulgaria and Turkey intend to connect their gas networks.

“It will be the first step for diversification of gas supplies to Bulgaria,” Borisov said after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sofia.

However, Bulgarian Prime Minister did not specify the construction terms or gas supply volumes, RIA Novosti reported.

Nabucco project envisages transportation of natural gas from the Caspian region to European countries via Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Austria, bypassing Russia. It is designed for annual transportation of 31bln cubic meters of gas, what makes around 5% of EU needs in 2020. The consortium consists of German RWE, Austrian OMV, Romanian Transgaz, Bulgarian Bulgargaz and Hungaryan MOL. The project is estimated 7.9bln euros.
