Russia to reimburse Iran for scrapped S-300 missile deal

Today, October 7, a senior Russian official said Russia plans to reimburse Iran for a scrapped S-300 missile deal.

President Dmitry Medvedev banned the delivery of the high-precision missiles to Iran last month, saying that sending them would violate sanctions adopted by the UN Security Council.

Sergei Chemezov, the head of the state-controlled conglomerate Russian Technologies, which includes arms exporter Rosonboroneksport, said Russia planned to reimburse Iran for its downpayments on the deal but said it was unlikely the money would be returned by the end of the year.

He declined to give a figure for the funds in question. Iran has threatened to sue Russia over what it regards as a breach of contract, RFE/RL reported.
