Russia returns to “wild battalions”?

The Russian General Staff is going to conduct an experiment with creation of mono-ethnic and mono-confessional battalions in some military units. Nezavisimaya Gazeta paper quoted a source in the General Staff as saying that the battalions will be established to tackle hazing in the military based on national criteria. According to the source, persons of one nation and one religion will serve in the experimental battalions.

“Thus, it is a return to the experience of wild battalions, which initially existed in the army of the Russian Empire and then were preserved for some period in the Soviet army. And there is sense in it,” said Lieutenant General Yuri Netkachev.

On October 18, military police will be established in the Russian army to struggle against hazing in the military.
