Two convicted for espionage in Armenia

A Yerevan court has sentenced Armenian citizen G. Hayrapetyan (under article 299.1 and 235.1 of the RA Criminal Code) and Iranian citizen B. Bageri (under article 302) for 12 and 10 years in prison respectively on accusation of espionage.

Hayrapetyan was convicted for being recruited by Azerbaijan with a purpose to provide information about the efficiency and defense potential of the Armenian army as well as materials to be used for anti-Armenian propaganda.

The last task Hayrapetyan received from Bageri, Iranian citizen of Azerbaijani origin, who used a photograph of Hayrapetyan’s acquaintance, an officer of Azerbaijani special forces, as a password. Hayrapetyan welcomed Bageri in his house, where he handed over the documents which were later confiscated by Armenian national security officers at a checkpoint in Meghri.

During a search in Hayrapetyan house, weapons and ammunition were found, reported the press service of the Armenian Public Prosecutor’s Office.
