Armenia partly free, local experts say

Armenia is a party free country, inclined to be not free, according to the experts of the Yerevan-based committee on protection of freedom of speech.

“The most serious problem is the economic and political freedom of Armenian media,” committee chairman Ashot Melikyan said. “Officially, there is no censorship in Armenia, yet, media is under pressure.”

The research was held in August-September 2010 in compliance with Freedom House standards.

“Freedom House draws reports on the basis of surveys conducted by experts with a critical approach. Armenia was ranked as not free with 66 points. However, we offered media representatives and independent experts to assess the situation themselves,” sociologist Vardan Gevorgyan added.
