Opponents of Armenian Genocide resolution capitulate to fear of Turkish reaction

As Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) continues to work with his colleagues and Congressional leaders regarding a vote on H.Res. 252, the Armenian Genocide resolution, the Turkish Caucus Co-Chairs joined by outgoing Member of Congress William Delahunt (D-MA) issued a "Dear Colleague" letter against this bipartisan bill, reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly).

The Dear Colleague letter cites a laundry list of reasons against the bill, including the "potential to undermine our national security interests throughout the Caucasus, the Balkans, Middle East and Central Asia," as well as possibly harm "negotiations to repair the relationship between Israel and Turkey." The letter also noted that collaborating with Turkey could help pull the United States economy "out of recession."

"This letter misses the mark," stated the Assembly's Executive Director Bryan Ardouny. "The resolution is neither about Turkey nor about building schools in Afghanistan, nor is it about the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the U.S. economy. This resolution as espoused by then Senators Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton is about America's values," Ardouny stated.
