Ara Nranyan: vehicle insurance tariffs are unreasonably high

Ara Nranyan, ARF Dashnaktsutyun parliamentary group member serving on the NA standing committee on economic affairs, said that the Armenian government should have chosen the way of social risks insurance prior to introduction of the Law on Mandatory Vehicle Insurance.

“We are not against introduction of the compulsory vehicle insurance in principle. The experience of developed countries, specifically of the EU, suggests that the compulsory insurance, being one of the best ways for social problems solution, has several components, while the mandatory vehicle insurance is not the first one on the list of these types of insurance. There are numerous social risks, which have been insured in Europe much earlier than this one,” said Nranyan.

Besides, according to him, the tariffs for mandatory vehicle insurance are unreasonably high.

Nranyan said that judging from the experience of other countries, the number of road traffic accidents increases by 4-5 times after introduction of the mandatory vehicle insurance.

2,000 road traffic accidents were recorded in Armenia annually, thus, after introduction of the mandatory vehicle insurance their number may reach maximum 10,000, while 30,000 accidents were taken into consideration during calculation of the tariffs.
