Easter to coincide with Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day in 2011

This year the Easter falls on April 24, to coincide with the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day.

As the dean of the Theology Faculty at Yerevan State University, Bishop Anushavan Zhamkochyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, people should first visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial and then attend the Easter liturgy.

“We should first pay tribute to the memory of the innocent victims of the Genocide and then pray for the Resurrection. There is something symbolic in this coincidence. And the existence of the Armenian people symbolizes Resurrection itself. We proved that people can revive after a massacre and become even stronger,” he said.

Meanwhile, some representatives of the Armenian Apostolic Church believe that Armenians should first of all go to church and then commemorate the Genocide.

“Holy Etchmiadzin will develop regulations to explain what to do,” spokesman Vahram Melikyan said.

Easter is celebrated the nest Sunday after the full moon that falls after the vernal equinox during the period of March 21 – April 26.
