IAEA, EU provide assistance for increasing safety of Armenian NPP

Chief Engineer of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Movses Vardanyan stated that Turkish media reports saying that many international organizations, including IAEA and EU, demand closure of the Armenian NPP are untrue.

According to Turkish political analyst, head of TURKSAM think tank Sinan Ogan, “Metsamor nuclear power plant operating on Armenia’s territory poses a threat to the entire region, but first of all to Turkey.”

“These are Turkey’s statements, while the IAEA and EU provide assistance for increasing safety of the Armenian NPP,” Movses Vardanyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

The Armenian NPP was commissioned in 1976. Currently, only its second unit with a capacity of 407.5 MWatt operates.

According to specialists, the NPP can be exploited until 2016.
