Karen Andreasyan elected as new Armenian Ombudsman

The National Assembly of Armenia elected a new Armenian Ombudsman, with 83 parliamentarians voting for and 13 against the candidacy of Karen Andreasyan.

97 MPs participated in the voting; 1 bulletin was named invalid.

According to Armenian Constitution, the candidature of the Ombudsman should be supported by a minimum of 1/5 MPs; a minimum of 3/5 MPs is required to vote in favor of the Ombudsman-to-be-elected. The Ombudsman is elected for the term of 6 years.

Former Armenian Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan resigned to take up the position of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Representative in Central Asia.
