Armenian nuclear plant not afraid of IAEA inspections

Spokesperson for the Armenian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Lusine Harutyunyan said that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducts regular inspections at the Armenian NPP located in Metsamor.

“No violations related to the Armenian NPP’s safety and technical conditions have been revealed by IAEA inspections up to date,” Harutyunyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

Adil Garibov, Director of the Radiation Problems Institute of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences told Trend on April 6 that Azerbaijan may apply to IAEA for conducting an enlarged expertise at Metsamor NPP.

IAEA commission will arrive in Armenia on May 14 to conduct a range of inspections at Metsamor NPP with respect to reactor’s re-launch, fuel and safety, said Garibov.

According to him, Metsamor NPP was constructed with “outdated technologies, thus, there are suppositions on shortages at the plant.”
