Los Angeles City Council to commemorate Armenian Genocide 96th anniversary

The Los Angeles City Council, led by Councilmember Paul Krekorian and Council President Eric Garcetti, are poised to commemorate the 96th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide Wednesday, April 20, 2011.

During a morning presentation, the Council will honor the legacy of Richard G. Hovannisian, world-renowned author and one of the foremost experts of the Armenian Genocide.

Krekorian and Garcetti will honor Hovannisian, a professor of Armenian and Near Eastern History at UCLA, during a 9 a.m. ceremony followed by a full presentation in front of the entire City Council, who will present him with an official recognition for his work in ensuring the memory of the 1.5 million who perished in the 20th Century’s first genocide will live on in history books forever.

Last year, the City Council honored filmmaker Dr. J. Michael Hagopian, one of the few remaining survivors of the Genocide before his death on Dec. 10, 2010.
