Chairman of the State Nuclear Safety Regulatory Commitее Ashot Martirosyan said that experienced specialists currently work at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and they are ready for any emergency situations at the plant.
The 1982 fire was the biggest challenge faced by the nuke employees, as it was envisaged neither under the scheduled project nor the list of severe accidents of the NPP. “However, the NPP staff managed to react immediately to the situation and take measures needed for reactor cooling,” Martirosyan told a press conference in Yerevan on April 20.
According to him, the NPP staff is prepared much better now. Besides, every year employees of the emergency response center of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant undergo special training in Slovakia.
On October 15, 1982, fire happened at the Armenian NPP. It took seven hours to suppress the fire.
