Armenian nuclear plant safety being examined

Chairman of the State Nuclear Safety Regulatory Commitее Ashot Martirosyan said the Armenian nuclear power plant (NPP) has launched thorough study of safety level, the results of which will be presented in September 2011. The procedure is carried out in compliance with a special test developed by Western European Nuclear Regulators' Association (WENRA).

Besides, the Armenian NPP will be studied for resistance to external and internal factors, such as earthquake or storms. Besides, the NPP’s operation in case of severe accidents will be studied, taking into consideration the situation at Japanes Fukushima, Martirosyan told a press conference in Yerevan on April 20.

IAEA expert group will be in Armenia on May 15-June 1 to study the level of the NPP safe exploitation on site.

According to Martirosyan, it is a scheduled event, which was agreed with IAEA already in 2010.
