Armenia mulls bringing draft age from 18 to 19

On May 11, the Armenian National Assembly discussed a bill on making amendments to the RA Law on Military Service.

Presenting the bill in the parliament, Armenian Minister of Justice Hrayr Tovmasyan said adoption of the bill is important, since as a result of the transfer to a 12-year system of secondary education, around 6,000 young people will graduate from schools after reaching the draft age, which is currently 18.

Tovmasyan noted that the bill envisages increasing the military age and drafting young people to the army from 19. According to him, the bill will clarify the situation for 6,000 Armenian citizens, who will be drafted to the army only after graduation from school. Tovmasyan said that the bill was discussed with the Armenian Ministers of Defense and Education and Science. Besides, the bill was positively estimated by the RA NA Committee on Defense, Security and Internal Affairs.
