Can Israel recognize Armenian Genocide to spite Turkey?

The Knesset’s decision to discuss the Armenian Genocide was most likely prompted by the deteriorating relations with Turkey, according to director of the Institute of Oriental Studies at Armenian Academy of Sciences.

“Zionist organizations in the U.S. which established contacts with the Armenian lobby are also involved. Although, I do not think that Israel will recognize the Armenian Genocide,” prof. Ruben Safrastyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

“For Jews, there was one genocide – the Holocaust and they will hardly recognize another crime against humanity,” he said.

With a 20-0 vote, the Knesset decided on a discussion of the Armenian Genocide issue at the education and culture panel. Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin said, that “the conflict between Turks and Armenians can be a justification for the denial of a nation’s tragedy. It’s our moral duty, as Jews and just as people, to recognize this atrocity.”
