The most reliable partner for Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home) party in preventing adoption of any Armenian Genocide resolution by the Knesset is Israel’s President Shimon Peres, who back in 2001 stated in a capacity of Foreign Minister that “it’s senseless to assert that Armenian like Jews were subjected to Genocide. Identification in this issue is unacceptable.”

Eight years later he became the first President of Israel to pay a state visit to Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, members of Meretz and Likud parties act as a counterbalance to this stance, pressing for recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Knesset. Some believe that Likud representatives are pushing the issue to spite Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who shows no intention to cede positions.
