RA Ombudsman to submit bill on liberalization of television broadcasting

Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan is going to submit a bill to the National Assembly, which envisages liberalization of television broadcasting.

The package of suggestions is ready and it will be submitted to the Armenian parliament soon, Andreasyan told a discussion organized by the Civilitas Foundation.

According to him, OSCE labeled the project as ideal and expressed hope for its adoption. Andreasyan noted that the bill envisages increase in the number of private TV companies in Armenia, provision of greater freedom in the field of satellite broadcasting, minimization of control over online media, etc.

On June 10, 2010, the Armenian parliament adopted a bill on making changes and amendments to the RA Law on Television and Radio. The adopted law regulates the process of television and radio digitization. Under the law, the number of Armenia’s TV companies will be decreased from 22 to 18 until completion of the digitization process by 2015.
