The possible union between the Armenian National Congress and current authorities during the upcoming elections is heatedly discussed for several days.

During the May 23 press conference, New Times party leader Aram Karapetyan did not rule out the possibility of an alliance between the Armenian National Congress (ANC) and the authorities, who might follow Miasnutyun Union’s example. Karapetyan reminded about the time when opposition leader Karen Demirchyan formed Miasnutyun Union with then prime minister Vazgen Sargsyan, despite his complicated relations with the authorities. According to Karapetyan, the two parties have not planned a union yet. Despite it, Karapetyan’s statement has caused a public response and become a key topic for discussions.

If representatives of opposition parties did not exclude such a possibility in their comments, members of the ruling party tried to deny it. Member of the Republican Party of Armenia parliamentary group Hovhannes Sahakyan said the issue was never discussed. He also recommended against commenting on unconfirmed allegations.

Independent parliament member Vardan Khachatryan said cooperation with the authorities can affect people’s attitude towards the Armenian National Congress (ANC).

It should be noted that even a dialogue with the authorities can have a considerable impact on ANC’s popularity without a union. Media outlets continue spreading rumors about a possible deal between the authorities and ANC, as a result of which the latter should obtain a certain number of seats in the future parliament. And despite all refutations by ANC representatives, these rumors grow like weeds.

In any case, currently one can only hypothetically speak about the authorities’ possible union with ANC, since even the existence of this dialogue is stated with great conventions.
