Armenia should transfer Karabakh talks to legal ground – DPA leader

Armenia should reject the Madrid principles for the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement and transfer the negotiations to the legal ground, according to Aram Sargsyan, leader of Democratic Party of Armenia.

“The Armenian Parliament should recognize the legality of Karabakh’s secession from Azerbaijan. as well as the fact that formation of independent Artsakh state was in line with all norms of international law,” he told a press conference.

As regards the Kazan meeting, according to Sargsyan, it will be completion of the current stage of talks. He drew attention to diametrically opposite positions of the sides in the conflict and noted that only international pressure may result in signing of any formal agreement.

The trilateral meeting is scheduled for June 25 in Kazan. Experts do not exclude that a certain document on Karabakh conflict settlement will be signed during the meeting.

On May 26, on the sidelines of G8 summit in Deauville, Presidents of Russia, U.S. and France adopted a joint statement on the Karabakh conflict settlement and urged the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders to “prepare population for peace, but not war,” as well as “finalize works on basic principles for the settlement during the upcoming meeting in June.”
