Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway to become operative in 2013

Construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will be fully completed by late 2012. The corridor will be fully operational by early 2013, Azerbaijani Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov said at Thursday’s opening of the 10th Anniversary of International Transport, Transit and Logistics Exhibition for TransCaspian Azerbaijan.

He said that the opening of the railway tunnel under the Bosporus - the Marmaris project -- will be completed in Turkey in 2013, which will enable the transportation and delivery of freight via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway to Europe.

Also, Mammadov said that the first phase of a new international trade seaport in the Alat settlement will be commissioned in Azerbaijan in mid-2014.

He stressed that Azerbaijan’s entire road infrastructure will be brought into line with international standards within three years, Trend News reported.
