On June 30, a 7-member Armenian team for alpinism and mountain tourism was invited by their Iranian colleagues to participate in Damavand mount climb.

Mount Damavand (5671 meters) is the highest peak in Iran, the highest point in the Middle East and the highest volcano in all of Asia.

This will be Armenia’s first participation in the events of such scale over the past 15 years and the first serious attempt to restore the tradition of Armenian alpinism.

Armenian Federation of Alpinism and Mountain tourism was founded on March 1, 2011. The Federation’s activities aim at development of mountain tourism and involvement of youth in active rest. The director of Armenian Rescue Service at the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Major General Sergey Azaryan, was elected as the Federation chairman.
