By 2020, 11-12% of Yerevan territory will be occupied by cemeteries, an expert said.

As a member of the International Academy of Ecology Ashot Khoetsyan told a news conference in Yerevan, cemetery territories, currently amounting to 560 hectares, will be expanded by 300 hectares in the years to come. “By that rate, 30-40% of the capital will be occupied by the cemeteries in 2050,” he remarked.

As the head of the department of environment and community hygiene at State Hygienic Antiepidemic Inspectorate of Armenian Healthcare Ministry Aida Petikyan, in turn, noted, the necessity of building crematoriums in Armenia grows every year.

According to her, the need to build crematorium is prompted not only be the restricted cemetery territories, but also by the importance of avoiding epidemic outbreaks and infectious diseases.
