Ross Wilson: by resolving Karabakh issue, Armenia, Azerbaijan will win their peoples’ trust

Evidently, Kazan meeting was not successful. It was one of many similar meetings, Director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, former US ambassador to Azerbaijan and Russia Ross Wilson stated.

“I hope that the Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders will take necessary measures for achievement of agreement on the basic principles and start work on the details of the conflict’s settlement,” Wilson said.

According to him, the leaders of two countries can win a credit of trust from their people settling the conflict. “It has to be accomplished in near future, but, certainly, it is a very difficult work,” APA cited him as saying.

On July 8, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov handed over a personal message and proposals of RF President Dmitry Medvedev to Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev.

At June 24 meeting in Kazan, the Presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia failed to sign an agreement on basic principles of Karabakh conflict settlement.

As Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian noted later, despite the OSCE MG co-chairs’ efforts, Azerbaijan was not ready to accept the final version of basic principles, presenting ten new amendments at the last moment.
