Gabriel Sargsyan: We have excellent coach and team

July 27, the Armenian chess team returned to the homeland; it became winner of the 8th World Team Chess Championship.

President of Armenia and head of Chess Federation Serzh Sargsyan met chess players at the airport and congratulated them with a great victory. Thousands people gathered in the airport to welcome champions.

Immediately upon arrival at Yerevan, the Armenian team with only #1 Levon Aronyan missing went to the Liberty square to enjoy concert dedicated to them.

The coach of the Armenian chess team Arshak Petrosyan noted that they felt support of the Armenian people and did their best to win.

“This year the World Championship was the strongest in the history due to its participants. And we are very happy for the victory. We are grateful for support and will try to justify your expectations in future,” Petrosyan said.

#4 Gabriel Sargsyan also thanked all supporters and said: “We have excellent coach and team, and I am thankful to all for this victory.”

Sergey Movsisyan who played for the Armenian team first time (before that, he competed under the Slovak flag), stressed that this is his first victory and feelings are new. “The team is experienced and the chess players admitted the victory with perfect calm,” he said.

“In each round we felt your support, and this is our common victory,” said Vladimir Hakopyan.

Robert Hovhannisyan, who played just one match and defeated, thanked his team for the victory.
