Medvedev submits agreement on military bases in Abkhazia, South Ossetia for ratification

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has submitted an agreement on deployment of joint Russian bases in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The agreement was signed in 2010 for a 49-year period with possible prolongation for another 15 years. The main task of the bases is to curb possible aggression against the two republics and guarantee security of Russian citizens.

Agreement with Abkhazia envisages naval cooperation, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.
