EU doesn’t recognize presidential election results in Abkhazia

The European Union does not recognize the legal framework of presidential elections in Abkhazia, held on August 26, according to ITAR-TASS.

"The European Union reiterates its support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as recognized by international law," EU High Representative Catherine Ashton said, adding that the EU “emphasizes the importance of ensuring the security and stability in the region.”

Alexander Ankvab got 54,86% of votes at the August 26 presidential elections that account for the passing away of President Sergey Bagapsh on May 29. Prime Minister Sergey Shamba and Forum of National Unity of Abkhazia opposition party leader Raul Khadjimba also ran for the post.

71,92% of voters on the rolls participated in the elections.
