Yerevan hosts discussion on violence in government agencies

On September 9, Yerevan hosted a discussion on Armenia report of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment .

According to David Amiryan, deputy director of Partnership for Open Society initiative, such discussions enable representatives of different NGOs and institutions to combine efforts for prevention of violence in various open and closed ventures.

For his part, Alex Sardar, director of Counterpart International Armenia office considered it unacceptable that there is violence in a country which survived Genocide. “If they can not provide soldiers’ security in the army, if citizens do not trust government agencies and if human rights organizations can’t come together in this issue, then discussing the problem makes no sense,” he said.

He also added that relevant actions must be taken for prevention of violence. “The point of discussions is not that civil society goes against authorities or vice versa. The point is that people in this country live worthy life,” Sardar said.
