German ambassador says Karabakh recognition is not actual

Germany supports OSCE Minsk Group mediation efforts as the only acceptable format for resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

“Karabakh issue hinders normal development of the countries in the region,” Germany’s ambassador to Armenia Hans Jochen-Schmidt told a press conference in Yerevan.

He emphasized that Germany stands for normalization of Armenia-Turkey relations. “The countries of the region and EU seek to create favorable conditions in the South Caucasus, particularly for fostering the economy,” he noted.

Commenting on the European integration and relations with EU, the ambassador said that the Karabakh conflict resolution will largely help stabilization of the region. As he noted, the issue of Karabakh recognition “is not actual at the moment, due its complexity.” However, he said, regardless of the conflict, active integration process is required.

The ambassador emphasized that the negotiations should base the principle of territorial integrity and the right of nations to self-determination.
