Dell unveils less than an inch thick notebook

Dell added a 14-inch model to its new line of thin XPS z series laptops though availability, for now, will be limited to China. The computer is less than an inch thick and has about seven hours of battery life with normal use, CNET reports.

It comes with Intel Core i5 and Core i7 Sandy Bridge processors and includes an optical drive. It has 4G RAM, 500GB HDD, and 1GB video, USB 3.0 ports and 1366x768 HD LED display.

The company hasn't announced pricing plans, but the lowest configuration of the XPS 14z will likely be priced above $999.

In Dell's most recently reported second quarter, which ended July 29, the company said sales of its consumer laptops and desktops grew 4% as the division pulled an operating profit of $73 million, compared to an operating loss of $21 million the same time a year ago.
