Iran summons Azeri ambassador over border guard killing

Iran's Foreign Ministry has summoned the Azerbaijani ambassador to Tehran to protest the killing of an unarmed Iranian border guard for 'straying' into Azerbaijan.

Press TV reports that the head of Border Affairs Office in Iran's Foreign Ministry criticized the Azeri border guards' reported detention and killing of a young Iranian border guard and said such an act contravenes international regulations, and flouts agreements between the two countries.

The Iranian official also called on the Azeri government to bring the perpetrators to justice, a Foreign Ministry’s statement said on Friday, October 21.

The Azerbaijani ambassador expressed regret over the incident and assured that Tehran's message would be conveyed to Baku as soon as possible and that a response would be relayed to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

On Wednesday, an unarmed Iranian border guard entered Azerbaijani territory by mistake and was shot dead by Azeri security forces.

A similar incident occurred in early July when an Azerbaijani border guard who crossed into Iran was killed in a clash with Iranian guards.
