Earthquake rocks Turkey near Iraq border

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rocked Turkey at the border with Iraq an hour ago, according to the country’s seismological service.

Tremors were felt in provinces southwards of Van. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said a 3.8 magnitude tremor followed after the first one.

The death toll from the October 23 quake stands at 471, with 1,352 people injured.

Although many other countries, including Armenia, had offered assistance in the wake of the earthquake, Turkey says many have not yet confirmed whether they will be able to provide the materials Ankara is requesting. Turkey has notified about 40 countries and international organizations of its immediate needs.
