Political analyst says Armenia’s diplomacy reflectory

Armenian political analyst believes Azerbaijan’s accession to UN Security Council as a non-permanent member to arise concern. As Yervand Bozoyan told a news conference in Yerevan, “Azerbaijan will attempt to use the UNSC seat to pressure OSCE Minsk Group into shifting position on Karabakh settlement in Baku’s favor.”

The expert accused Armenian diplomacy of inactivity, characterizing the policy as reflectory. “Currently, Armenia pursues defensive policy without any specific strategy developed. For a country facing serious problems, such a policy is unacceptable,” he stressed.

“As opposed to Armenia, Azerbaijan is seriously working on its image, which triggered Baku’s accession to UNSC,” the expert said.

Azerbaijan has secured a seat on the UN Security Council in 2012-2013 after Slovenia withdrew from the race following 16 inconclusive rounds of voting.

Azerbaijan's victory was confirmed when it received 155 votes in the 193-nation UN General Assembly, ensuring that it joins Pakistan, Morocco, Guatemala and Togo as temporary members of the 15-nation council in January.

The Security Council is the powerhouse of the United Nations, with the ability to impose sanctions and dispatch peacekeeping forces.
