Japan's Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba says the government is considering new sanctions against Iran for its failure to safeguard foreign embassies.

About 1,000 Iranians stormed the British embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, November 29, to protest economic sanctions over Iran's nuclear program. They smashed windows, wrecked offices and burned the British flag.

Speaking in Tokyo on Wednesday, November 30, Gemba criticized the Iranian government's handling of the incident, saying it has a duty to protect diplomatic facilities. He urged Iran to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Gemba added that Japan will consult with other countries to consider new measures against Iran. Japan has already imposed several sanctions against Tehran since September last year.

It has frozen the assets of groups and individuals suspected of being involved in Iran's nuclear program, and has banned new investment in the country's energy sector, NHK reported.
