Armenian parliament debates national strategy on human rights

Armenia’s National Assembly hosted a public hearing of the national strategy for human rights protection. The discussion was organized by the NA and National Security Council jointly with EU Advisory Group to Armenia.

At the event, vice speaker of parliament Eduard Sharmazanov and NSC secretary Artur Baghdasaryan expressed hope for current discussions to provide new ideas in formation of the Strategy, suggesting all interested parties submit their offers by January 15.

“In late January, the Strategy will be discussed at NSC to be submitted for presidential confirmation,” Baghdasaryan said.

The NSC Secretary further called for legislative and institutional reforms in human rights sector, specifically stressing the importance of human rights protection at penitentiary institutions.

Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan and EU delegation head in Armenia Traian Hristea also participated in the discussions. As Hristea stressed, “EU welcomes efforts aimed to promote human rights protection and democracy in countries worldwide.”
