Benjamin Markarian’s Study on Galaxies granted UNESCO certificate

A world-renowned Armenian astronomer Benjamin Markarian’s Study on Galaxies was included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register.

On December 19, the Deputy Foreign Minister Ashot Hovakimian handed the UESCO certificate over to Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory director Hayk Harutyunyan.

As the Armenian official noted at certificate granting ceremony, UNESCO’s Register, including 239 articles from 100 countries worldwide, aims to prevent elimination of valuable archives and libraries.

“Benjamin Markarian’s Study found its place among the archives of Chinese Emperors, League of Nations, works of Copernicus, Bach and Beethoven,” Hovakimian said.

The application for Benjamin Markarian’s Study’s enlistment in UNESCO’s International Register was jointly prepared by Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory and Armenian National Commission for UNESCO to be submitted to UNESCO Headquarters in 2010.
