UNESCO cuts funding for Palestinian youth magazine

The UN's cultural agency says it's pulling funding for a Palestinian youth magazine over an "unacceptable" article suggesting admiration for Hitler.

UNESCO said Friday, December 23, it "strongly deplores and condemns" the material from the February issue of the magazine Zayzafouna, to which it has contributed funding.

In the article, a teenage girl from the West Bank presented four role models, including the Nazi leader. Hitler tells her in a dream that he killed Jews "so you would all know that they are a nation which spreads destruction all over the world."

A translation was publicized by Palestinian Media Watch, an Israeli organization.

The magazine's supervisor, Sharif Samhan, said UNESCO was not a major backer of the magazine. He would not comment further, The Associated Press reported.
