Legendary intelligence agent Gevork Vartanian dies at 87

Armenian intelligence agent, Hero of the Soviet Union Gevork Vartanian died of cancer in Moscow's Botkin Hospital.

Gevork Vartanian will be buried at Yerevan Pantheon, Russian-Armenian Union told PanARMENIAN.Net.

Gevork Vartanian was born February 17, 1924 in Rostov-on-Don. His father was a Soviet intelligence agent, sent to Persia in 1930, to work for 23 years under a cover of a wealthy merchant. Gevorg Vartanian was not even 16 when he went into intelligence. In 1955, he graduated from the Institute of Foreign Languages, Yerevan. He was one of the men responsible for thwarting Operation Long Jump, orchestrated by Adolf Hitler, headed by Ernst Kaltenbrunner, and led by Otto Skorzeny, which was an attempt to assassinate Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt at Tehran conference in 1943.
