Cricket umpire kills fan in Bangladesh

A 15-year-old cricket fan in Bangladesh has been killed after being hit on the head with a bat by an umpire, according to local police.

The fan in question, Nazrul Islam, ran on to the pitch to complain about a contentious decision and the umpire responded by grabbing one of the players' bats and striking the teenager on the head.

The young fan initially showed no signs of serious injury but that night he suffered internal haemorrhaging and died the following day.

The umpire is wanted by police for questioning but has since gone into hiding. The incident happened in the remote northern Bangladeshi district of Kishoreganj.

"The two argued over a not-out decision by the umpire. He accused the umpire of bias. At one stage, the umpire became angry, took a bat and hit the young boy on the head," local police chief Mosharraf Hossain said.

Cricket is Bangladesh's most popular sport and last year the country co-hosted the cricket World Cup with India and Sri Lanka, Eurosport reported.
