Cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan to perform in Oklahoma

Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, and what has come to known as the "Enigma" Variations will be featured when the Signature Symphony at Tulsa Community College, Oklahoma, presents its "All-Elgar" concert, on Feb 11.

The winner of the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan will be the soloist for the Elgar Cello Concerto, Tulsa World reports.

Hakhnazaryan took First Prize and the Gold Medal in the cello portion of the competition, held last summer in Moscow. In 2008, he won the first prize in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

Hakhnazaryan was a student of the late Mstislav Rostropovich, and has performed throughout Europe, Russia and Canada as a representative of the Mstislav Rostropoivch Foundation.

Elgar's Cello Concerto was one of the last works of music Elgar would write - it premiered in 1919, and the next year, following the death of his wife, Elgar stopped composing.
