Arab League mulls recognising Syrian opposition

Arab League foreign ministers are to discuss a possible recognition of the Syrian National Council as the main opposition group at a meeting in Cairo on Sunday, February 12, Saudi semi-official newspaper Al Sharq reported citing Arab sources.

The move is based on remarks made recently by Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal that recognizing the Syrian opposition group will be handled “within an Arab framework,” the report quoted unnamed sources as saying.

“The ministers will also look into urgent solutions to stop the killing machine in Syria,” it said.

It comes as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad continues to bombard and shell Homs and its neighbourhood, leaving hundreds dead. Outraged over the violence, many countries have withdrawn their envoys to Damascus with sanctions have bolstered, according to BM.
