Death toll from U.S. tornadoes stands at 27 nationwide

The death toll from a series of violent storms now stands at 27 nationwide after authorities in Kentucky said a total of 12 people have died there, according to The Associated Press.

A Kentucky state government spokesman said one new death was reported in Morgan County, where 50 Kentucky National Guardtroops were deployed along with a rescue team.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Chuck Wolfe says four others were killed in Menifee County, four in Laurel County and three in Kenton County as tornadoes hit multiple spot across the state.

The powerful storms that stretched from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes also killed 14 people in Indiana and 1 in Ohio.
