PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian National team head coach Joaquín Caparrós has commented on midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s decision to retire from international football, saying that it’s a sad day for the squad.

After 95 international caps, hard work, passion and "unprecedented ups and downs along the journey, Mkhitaryan said he has taken the decision to retire from international career with the Armenian National Team.

“Our captain, leader and the most talented player of Armenian football history has decided to retire from international football. I was lucky to enjoy him playing and training in the national team," Caparrós said.

"All his coaches underline his devotion and professional attitude. It was a great honor to train such a player. I think, that Heno is more than just a player for Armenian football. He is a leader and will always be a leader.”

President of the Football Federation Armen Melikbekyan described Mkhitaryan as the best player in independent Armenia's history.

"His contribution cannot be overestimated. He has had brilliant performances in European top leagues, making Armenia highly recognizable on the map of international football," Melikbekyan said.

"I am sure, that his decision is thoroughly analyzed and must be treated accordingly. The doors of Armenian national team will always be open for Mkhitaryan.”
