Armenia seeking to “radically” reorient foreign policy, says Russia

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia is demonstrating an intention to radically reorient its foreign policy, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday, November 22, RIA Novosti reports.

“In my opinion, this is a frank attempt to hide the true intentions. It is clear that we are talking about a radical change in the country’s orientation in foreign affairs. In my opinion, this is clearly suggested or prompted by the West,” Zakharova told a briefing, commenting on the statements in Armenia that Yerevan does not intend to change its foreign policy vector, as well as on the transfer of military equipment to the country by France.

The diplomat drew attention to the statement of the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan, who said that Armenia “is not aware of Moscow’s proposals” on the peace treaty between Yerevan and Baku.

“In September, October, November, the Armenian side received invitations to hold negotiations both in Moscow and on the sidelines of multilateral events, to which we still have not received clear answers... At the same time, Yerevan is eager to negotiate a peace treaty in Washington, Brussels, although neither the US nor the EU can be considered bona fide intermediaries for a variety of reasons,” she said.

Zakharova noted that the United States and the European Union seek to oust Russia from the South Caucasus.

“They want to destroy the existing security mechanisms in the region, while shamelessly literally stealing and altering the trilateral agreements reached with the participation of Moscow, in order to suit their opportunistic considerations. There is not and cannot be any real result from their mediation,” the diplomat maintained.

She added that “Yerevan’s reckless bet that the West will help them has failed.”
