Inarritu: Baku’s aggression threatens regional stability

PanARMENIAN.Net - Spanish MP Jon Inarritu condemned Azerbaijan's threats and territorial claims against Armenia, highlighting President Ilham Aliyev's actions and rhetoric as destabilizing forces fueling armed conflicts.

Inarritu warned that Azerbaijan’s aggressive policies jeopardize not only Armenia but also the stability of the entire region and the global order, according to Armenpress.

He emphasized the significance of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan publicly addressing Azerbaijan’s territorial ambitions in a recent interview. The MP described Aliyev’s regime as authoritarian, often paving the way for armed conflicts, with clear patterns evident in recent years.

Inarritu also noted Azerbaijan's complete backing from Turkey during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war and subsequent ethnic cleansing of Armenians in the region. He criticized the international community's passive response, which emboldened Baku to act with impunity, disregarding international law and human rights.

The MP labeled Azerbaijan’s “Western Azerbaijan” narrative as historical revisionism, used by Aliyev’s regime to justify its aggressive policies. He stressed that Armenia represents only a fraction of historical Armenia, homeland to an indigenous people subjected to repeated genocide and displacement over centuries.

Inarritu further highlighted the risks posed by Azerbaijan and Turkey’s close strategic ties, often described by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as “one nation, two states,” endangering Armenian identity and history in the region.

“This attempt to erase Armenian history and identity—whether through the Ottoman Turks in the past or Azerbaijan today—is part of a broader effort to rewrite the region’s heritage,” he said.

Aliyev previously demanded Armenia engage with the so-called “Western Azerbaijan” community, a term used to claim almost the entire territory of Armenia, including Yerevan.
