Norway ready to back Armenia’s democratic progressJanuary 31, 2025 - 18:38 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Norwegian Parliament (Storting) Speaker Masud Gharahkhani, during his visit to Armenia, underscored the country’s steadfast commitment to democratic development despite operating in a complex geopolitical environment. "Armenia has very challenging geopolitical neighbors, but it is the only country truly striving for democracy, anti-corruption, and the right values. That is why I believe we can help by sharing how our country was built on these values," Gharahkhani stated, according to Armenpress. He emphasized that although Norway is not an EU member, it shares European democratic values and is ready to support Armenia in advancing along this path. The Norwegian official also discussed cooperation opportunities between the two countries, particularly in the energy sector. "Norway is an important player in oil and gas, but we also aim to invest in renewable energy in the future," he noted. Regarding Armenia’s potential EU membership, Gharahkhani stressed the importance of consistent effort. "If you want to be an EU member, you have to work for it. You must ensure that your country is built on democracy, the rule of law, gender equality, and human rights," he stated. Addressing ongoing peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Gharahkhani highlighted the role of the international community in facilitating the process. "Your path toward a Euro-Atlantic solution depends on Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations. Therefore, I believe the international community should push for peace," he emphasized. He added that democratic nations, including Armenia and Norway, must support each other, as democracy is declining globally. As part of the visit by Nordic-Baltic parliamentary representatives, meetings were held with Armenia’s Parliament Speaker, Prime Minister, and President, during which European partners reaffirmed their support for Armenia’s European integration process.
