Armenia classified as a hybrid regime by EIU report

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has published its 2024 Democracy Index, assessing the state of democratic processes worldwide. According to the report, Armenia is classified among hybrid regimes with a score of 5.35 out of 10, placing 82nd out of 167 countries.

Armenia received its highest score in the electoral process and pluralism category, scoring 7.92, while the lowest was in political culture, with 3.13. The scores in other categories are: government functioning – 4.29, political participation – 6.11, and civil liberties – 5.29.

In recent years, Armenia has experienced a decline in its democracy index. In 2022, the country held the same 82nd position but with a higher score of 5.63. This figure decreased to 5.42 in 2023 and further to 5.35 in 2024.

Despite this decline, Armenia remains the leader in democracy scores within its region. Georgia ranks 94th with a score of 4.70, Azerbaijan is 126th with 2.80, Turkey is 103rd with 4.26, and Iran is 154th with 1.96.

Among post-Soviet countries, Armenia is surpassed only by Moldova, which scores 6.04, ranking 71st and classified among countries with flawed democracies. The Baltic states are exceptions in this group, possessing higher democratic indicators.
